I do want to make it clear that anyone dealing with a bill collector must protect their rights, however, if you feel your rights have been violated, call your state attorney general. They would be the best office to determine what to do if your rights have been violated. Also, if you have incurred a debt, it is your responsibility to pay your debts. Just because the collection agent is a jerk does not absolve you from the debt. You still owe the $ and you still have to pay what you owe.
We all deal with bill collectors at one time or another. The truth is: it sucks and so do they.I'm referring to those SOBs who call at all hours, harrass you mercilessly, and threaten you. Nearly all of them break the law and no one knows how to deal with them. They are out of control. They will threaten you with everything from calling your employer, telling your spouse, garnishing your wages, or having you arrested.
According to the Fair Debt collection Practices act they do have laws to follow, but we all know, they find ways to get around them. They will tell you they are an attorney - or some other BS, the fact of the matter is: if they are an attorney or not the laws still apply to them.
While I was looking something up, I came across a very interesting site which brings to light some of the more shady collection agencies and their practices in Buffalo, NY. Before you talk to another collection agency - check out this site! This site exposes some of the more unsavory debt collectors and the attorneys associated with them. A very interesting site!
